Traning Rules

Ph.D. Students will acquire the necessary Learning Credits (LC) through Courses (both dedicated and not dedicated to PhD) and Schools (e.g. Summer Schools,…). No LCs will be acquired on the basis of days spent working abroad and joining conferences as these are not considered as learning activities by the PhD Teaching Board. No LCs will be achieved through activities where the PhD Student acts as a lecturer and no LCs achieved for Courses followed before the beginning of the PhD.

Except for Courses of Laurea Degrees (which keep the LCs of the syllabus), in all other cases 1 LC is awarded for 3 hours of course/school attendance; maximum number of LCs awarded for a single course/school attendance is 8 LCs.

If Courses/Schools do not have final exams, no credits are assigned. If PhD Students want to acquire credits through these “no final exam” Courses/Schools, they will be requested to provide a public presentation/seminar about Course/School topics and LCs will be assigned consequently by the Teaching Board following the rule that 1 LC corresponds to 3 course hours. In practice, the public presentation/seminar is the exam. No LCs are assigned if no exam and no presentation/seminar is provided: simply attending a School/Course does not assure any LCs.

Each PhD Student has to acquire at least 30 LCs in the first 2 years of the PhD; last PhD year must be dedicated only to research activities; LCs acquired during the last PhD year may be justified only exceptionally.

Not mandatorily, a Research Advisor may be established for each PhD Student, both for didactic and scientific reasons. Concerning didactics, the Research Advisor should act together with the Tutor of the PhD Student with the aim of defining the PhD Student learning plan of each year (essentially courses and schools to be followed).

Each PhD Student will present his/her learning plan (courses and schools to be followed) during each year to the PhD Coordinator for approval after agreement with his/her Tutor. The plan may be updated during the year. The coordinator will send all the information he knows concerning Courses and Schools of possible interest.
