Dear Colleagues,
We would like to bring to your attention the upcoming edition of the Cruise School on Artificial Intelligence for Technological & Social Change, organized as part of the activities of the University of Genoa and scheduled to take place from 22 to 29 January 2027, aboard a cruise ship in the Mediterranean.
The Cruise School is an international and interdisciplinary academic programme aimed at:
- PhD candidates at any stage of their doctoral programme;
- Master’s students;
- researchers and postdoctoral fellows;
- faculty members and university staff;
- professionals, managers and industry experts;
- participants from STEM disciplines, social sciences and the humanities.
The programme aims to explore the role of Artificial Intelligence in technological innovation and social transformation processes by combining academic education, applied activities, interdisciplinary exchange and international networking.
The programme includes:
- lectures and seminars delivered by international experts from academia, industry and the innovation sector;
- a common module focusing on Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, data analysis, Futures Studies and Strategic Foresight;
- dedicated sessions on AI governance, regulation and ethics;
- two parallel thematic tracks:
- Engineering & Data-Driven Systems, covering control and optimization, digital and cognitive twins, Industrial AI, energy systems, data pipelines and operational efficiency;
- Policy, Society & Governance, covering causal inference, PLS-PM, innovation in Public Administration, socio-technical transformations, regulation and ethics-by-design;
- practical workshops involving AI modelling, data analysis, scenario building, public policy simulation and operational systems analysis;
- an interdisciplinary Business Game, in which participants will make decisions under conditions of risk and uncertainty, assess technological investments, allocate resources and balance economic sustainability, social impact and regulatory constraints;
- a group project addressing real-world challenges in the fields of logistics and port systems, healthcare and public health, or public policy and governance;
- a final presentation of the projects developed during the week.
PhD candidates will also have the opportunity to participate in the PhD Cruise Project Competition, presenting their individual research projects to a panel of experts. The activity will include a presentation of approximately 10–15 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session and the opportunity to receive qualified feedback on innovation, methodology, scientific, industrial or societal impact, and communication effectiveness. Awards will be presented to the most innovative projects, those with the strongest potential for practical impact, and the best presentations.
The overall academic workload corresponds to 7 ECTS credits. These credits may be recognised within PhD programmes and, for interested students, within the first-level University Master’s Programme in Governance of Technological & Social Changes for Development and Innovation – GT-SDI, subject to the procedures and regulations of the participant’s programme or home institution.

At the end of the Cruise School, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and, upon request, the documentation required for credit recognition. Participants are required to bring their own laptop computer; widely used tools, including Python and R, will be used during the workshops. No advanced prerequisites are required.
Participation may be funded or reimbursed through Erasmus+ funds, particularly through doctoral mobility programmes, staff mobility for training or staff mobility for teaching activities. Eligibility and reimbursement procedures depend on the regulations of each participant’s home university. Interested participants are therefore encouraged to contact their International Office or Erasmus Office in advance. The organizers can also provide assistance with the possible establishment of bilateral agreements.
Participation fees per person – Early Bird / Late Registration rates:
- Quadruple inside cabin: €770 / €950
- Triple inside cabin: €830 / €1,010
- Double inside cabin: €930 / €1,130
- Single inside cabin: €1,130 / €1,300
- Quadruple outside cabin: €890 / €1,070
- Triple outside cabin: €950 / €1,130
- Double outside cabin: €1,040 / €1,240
- Single outside cabin: €1,240 / €1,480
- Double balcony cabin: €1,130 / €1,360
- Single balcony cabin: €1,300 / €1,540
Registration is considered complete only upon receipt of payment. To benefit from the Early Bird rate, payment must be made by 30 September 2026. All payments received after this date, including those made directly by universities, will be subject to the Late Registration rate.
An exception applies to 42nd-cycle PhD candidates, whose doctoral programmes will begin on 1 November 2026. These participants will still be eligible for the Early Bird rate if payment is made by 30 November 2026.
Triple and quadruple cabins should preferably be booked by pre-arranged groups, with the names of all occupants provided during registration. Participants who do not already have cabin companions may be placed on a waiting list and, subject to availability, matched with other participants. Participation fees are indicated as non-refundable but may be transferred to another participant upon request.
In addition to its educational value, the week will provide an important opportunity to meet researchers, faculty members, professionals and representatives of international universities, identify new partners and develop scientific, educational and project-based collaborations in an intensive and informal environment.
We would also be very grateful if you could help us disseminate the initiative by forwarding this invitation to your partner universities, their International Offices, coordinators of international agreements and colleagues who may be interested. Our aim is to reach as many partner institutions as possible and encourage the participation of students, PhD candidates, researchers, faculty members and professionals from international universities.
